Quick guide to au pairing in Ireland

Prospective au pairs wanting to travel to Ireland as au pair must take into consideration the following:

Age

  • Au pairs are generally aged 18 – 28

 

Salary (Pocket money) 

  • On average an au pair in Ireland can expect to earn between  100-110 euro/week

 

Number of hours to work and days off

  • Ireland au pairs usually work between 25-35 hrs/week and usually get 2 days off per week. They are also allowed sufficient time off to attend language courses and cultural activities

 

Visas

  • No visa requirements for aupairing in the Ireland for EU nationals, although they are required to register with the police on their arrival to Ireland. Ireland is only accepting au pairs from EU.
  • Non EU Nationals can apply through the Holiday Maker Scheme or Student Visa and work permission requirements for non EU nationals

Duration of stay

  • EU nationals- no time limit
  • Non EU nationals, there is a time limit depending on the country of provenience. Please refer to the Visa Information Section for Ireland

 

Language requirements

  • There are no language requirements for Ireland, but it is suggested that an au pair must have a good understanding of English, the national language.

 

Health Insurance

  • Ireland au pairs, members of EU, have access to free health care, by registering with a local GP. However, it is advisable to take out travel and health insurance for emergencies.
  • Non EU au pairs must take out travel and health insurance as they have to pay for medical services. The host family must assist the au pair as soon as the au pair has arrived at their residence.

 

Travel costs:

  • The au pairs must pay for their own travel costs to Ireland

 

Ethnic diversity in Ireland

  • There is a diversity of ethnic minorities in Ireland. The Travelling community form the largest part followed by Caribbean, Jewish. It is however implied that emigrants from all over the world can be found in Ireland in small numbers
